A vestibule, two sets of doors with a small room between them, is the simplest way to stop an automatic entrance dumping heat every time it opens. The City of Edmonton's Access Design Guide asks for at least 1,600 mm of clear space in vestibules at City facilities. Private buildings follow the building code, but that is a good target.
Where there isn't room for a wide single slide, telescoping panels stack behind each other and give a wider clear opening from a narrower wall. For existing swing doors, a low-energy operator is often the least disruptive option.
Entrance types we install in Edmonton
Opening ranges are the ones Limitless works within. Each system is sized to your opening.
| Entrance | Opening range | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Single slide | 7 to 9 ft | Standard entrances with sidewall space for the panel to slide |
| Bi-parting slide | 9 to 14 ft | Wide, busy entrances such as retail and healthcare lobbies |
| Telescoping slide | Varies by model | Wide clear openings where wall space is tight |
| Low-energy swing | Existing door | Barrier-free entrances, interior doors and washrooms |
| Full-breakout slide | 7 to 14 ft | Entrances where the full width must open in an emergency |
Building for an Edmonton winter
The branch is in the city, and so are the conditions every entrance we install has to handle.
January averages -10.3°C
Edmonton's average January day sits at -10.3°C, so seals, thresholds and sensors on a new entrance are chosen for that cold, not a mild-climate spec sheet.

The City's Access Design Guide prefers wave-to-open sensors for interior doors at its own facilities.

- Approach from different angles. The door should open smoothly every time.
- Walk away. It should close once you leave the sensor zone.
- Stand in the safety zone. The door should not open into you while you're standing there.
- Block the beam by hand. The door should stay open, then close once the beam is clear.
- Stand still in the threshold. For about 10 seconds. The door should not close on you.
Send drawings or photos and our Edmonton branch will survey the opening.
Do you install automatic doors on Edmonton new-construction projects?
Yes. We take on new construction and subcontracted door packages across Alberta. On projects we review the Division 8 and 10 hardware schedules against the drawings before ordering, so the entrance, frame, hardware and access control all fit together on site.
Who services the entrance after it's installed?
Our Edmonton branch. Every door we install gets an ID tag and a history file, so service calls start with the door's records. For regular upkeep, ask about a preventative maintenance plan.
Is an annual inspection required for automatic doors?
AAADM recommends that automatic doors be checked every year by an AAADM-certified inspector. It's a recommendation, not a provincial law, but it's the accepted standard of care. Our technicians are AAADM-certified and can inspect on the same visit as maintenance.
