The hardware an inspector checks

On a fire inspection, doors in fire separations get checked for two things: do they close on their own, and do they latch. Exit doors get checked for whether they open easily from the inside. A tired closer or a worn latch fails both.

Our Edmonton branch fixes hardware on one door or on every door in a building. Each door gets a tag and a record of what was done, which is the kind of paper trail inspectors like to see.

Swapping knobs for levers

Many older Edmonton buildings still have round knobs, which are hard to turn with full hands or limited grip. Replacing them with levers is a common upgrade, and on fire-rated doors the new latchset has to suit the door's label.

We also see hold-open magnets that no longer release, and closers that were turned down until the door stopped latching. Both get fixed as part of a hardware visit. For the full opening, see door repair in Edmonton.

FAQ

Common questions

Still unsure? Call Edmonton at 780-306-9000.

What happens if a fire door holder doesn't release?

A magnetic holder on a fire door has to let the door go when the fire alarm sounds, so the door can close and latch. If it doesn't, the door is effectively propped open. We test and repair holders and the closers behind them.

Can you change hardware on a fire-rated door?

Yes. The new latch, closer or hinge has to be approved for a fire door of that rating, so the label tells us what we can fit.

Do you work with our access control company?

Yes. We supply and fit electric strikes, maglocks and electrified hardware, and coordinate with the company that runs your card readers.
