Sliding, swinging or low-energy: choosing the entrance

Sliding doors suit busy entrances and wide openings: single slides fit 7 to 9 feet, bi-parting doors 9 to 14 feet, and telescoping panels squeeze a wider clear opening out of a narrow wall. Swing operators suit existing doors, vestibules and washrooms. Our sliding door sizes guide has the numbers.

Where a sliding door has to open fully in an emergency, we fit full-breakout versions, where the sidelites swing out too. Where the entrance is on a barrier-free route, we check the clear opening against Alberta's 850 mm minimum before anything is ordered.

From survey to handover

  1. Survey the opening

Header room, power, floor finish, wall depth and what's already there. Photos and measurements go into the door's file.

  2. Pick the system

Configuration, breakout type, sensors and locking, matched to how busy the entrance is and who uses it.

  3. Check the rules

Barrier-free clear width and operator requirements, and whether the City of Calgary needs a permit for the wall work.

  4. Install and wire

Header, track, panels and operator, then sensors, electric locks and any card-reader or access control connections.

  5. Test and hand over

Sensor zones, speeds and signage set to A156.10. We walk your staff through the daily safety check before we leave.

What a new sliding door has to pass

ANSI/BHMA A156.10 sets the checks a power-operated sliding door must meet. These are three we set on every install.

Signs on both sides

Every automatic sliding door needs 'AUTOMATIC DOOR' signage visible from both sides, with letters at least 1/2 inch high.

A156.10 summary, autodoorandhardware.com

Open for 1.5 seconds after the last person

Once the sensors stop detecting someone, the door has to stay open for at least 1.5 seconds before it starts to close.

FAQ

Common questions

Still unsure? Call Calgary at 403-650-5232.

Can an existing manual entrance be converted to automatic?

Often, yes. A swing door can usually take an operator if the door, frame and hinges are sound. Converting to a sliding door means replacing the entrance, and it may involve wall work that needs a City of Calgary building permit. We check both during the survey.

Do you install automatic doors in hospitals and labs?

Yes. We install ICU, isolation and X-ray sliding doors, and cleanroom sliders with airlocks for ISO 3 and ISO 5 labs. These are specified closely with the facility's infection-control or lab requirements, so bring the spec or the drawings to the first meeting.

What do our staff get at handover?

A walkthrough of AAADM's daily safety check: approach from different angles, confirm the door closes after you leave, block the safety beam with a hand and pause in the doorway to confirm it won't close on you. After that, we recommend an annual AAADM inspection.
