A push-plate entrance, where someone presses a button before the door moves, runs on a low-energy operator under ANSI/BHMA A156.19. The door has to stop with no more than 15 pounds of force (67 N), it only moves after a 'knowing act', and it carries signage centred about 48 inches off the floor.
A full-power swing or sliding entrance that opens as people walk up follows A156.10 instead, with sensors and safety zones. We install and service both, including surface-mounted and concealed overhead operators, and we'll tell you which one your entrance actually needs.

Low-energy swing operators
For barrier-free entrances and interior doors. Record's HA-9, for example, is A156.19 compliant with adjustable manual force from 5 to 30 lb.

How the City of Calgary equips its own doors
The City's Access Design Standards apply to City-owned and City-operated buildings. They show what a fully accessible Calgary entrance looks like.
Operators on every barrier-free entrance
Standards 71, 72 and 127 put power door operators on all barrier-free entrances, on vestibule doors, and on doors to accessible washrooms.

- Manual force. Adjustable from 5 to 30 lb, so the door still works by hand.
- Reveal. Push reveal up to 14 inches and pull reveal up to 2 3/8 inches, non-handed.
- Standards. ANSI A156.19 compliant, and UL/cUL listed to UL 325 and UL 10C.
- Power for add-ons. 24 VDC auxiliary output at 1/2 A (1.1 A optional) for strikes and accessories.

Does our washroom door need an automatic opener?
If the washroom has a barrier-free toilet, yes. The Alberta Edition of the National Building Code requires a power door operator at the entrance to any washroom with a barrier-free water closet. A complete washroom control kit adds the lock, occupied indicator and push buttons.
Can an opener be added to a door we already have?
Usually. Retrofitting operators onto existing entrances is part of our retrofit work. We check the door, frame, hinges and power supply first, then fit the operator and switches. If the door or frame isn't up to it, we'll say so before quoting.
How often should an automatic door opener be inspected?
AAADM recommends an annual inspection by an AAADM-certified inspector, and our technicians hold that certification. Between visits, staff can run AAADM's daily safety check. Openers can also go on a preventative maintenance plan.
Can an opener work with our card readers?
Yes. Openers can be tied into electric strikes, card readers and access control, so the door only opens for people who are allowed in, or only unlocks during business hours. We coordinate with your security company where they manage the access system.
