Why Edmonton lobbies use revolving doors

A revolving door is always closed: some part of it is sealing the opening at every point in the turn. That's why towers, hotels and hospitals use them. A swinging or sliding door lets the cold straight into the lobby every time it opens.

We work on Boon Edam, Horton, Tormax, Crane and CJ Rush revolving doors, and we can source parts for the others: weatherstripping, seals, sweeps, sensors, lights, motors, wheels, bearings and glass.

A powered swing door beside it

Edmonton's Access Design Guide asks for a swing door with an automatic control immediately beside any revolving door in City facilities.

Wings that break out

A156.27 requires a breakout egress path at least 910 mm (36 in) wide, so the wings fold out of the way in an emergency.

Keeping a revolving door safe

Automatic revolving doors carry wing, end-wall, bottom-rail and entry-point sensors, plus signs and an emergency stop. A sensor that's dirty or out of adjustment either stops the door constantly or doesn't stop it when it should. Both need fixing quickly.

Most building codes treat a revolving door as an exit only if its wings collapse and there are hinged doors right beside it. We check both whenever we service one. For regular visits, ask about a preventative maintenance program.

FAQ

Common questions

Still unsure? Call Edmonton at 780-306-9000.

Can an old manual revolving door be upgraded?

Often, yes. Revolving door upgrades are part of our retrofit work, from adding power-assist to replacing an outdated unit with a modern automatic one. We assess the drum, wings and drive first.

Do you need a swing door beside a revolving door?

In most cases, yes. Building codes generally require hinged doors beside a revolving door used as an exit. Edmonton's Access Design Guide asks for a powered swing door beside revolving doors in City buildings. We service both.

What wears out first on a revolving door?

Sweeps and weatherstripping, which seal the wings against the drum, then bearings and drive parts on power-assisted and automatic units. Worn sweeps let cold air through, which defeats the point of the door.
