The rating belongs to the assembly

A fire door only earns its rating when the door, frame, hinges, closer and latch are all listed for it and installed together. Swap in the wrong closer, drill a hole for a lock that isn't listed, or add a kick plate that's too tall, and the assembly may no longer be rated.

Our labelled steel assemblies cover 20-minute through 3-hour openings. We fit only hardware the label allows, and repair existing doors without voiding them.

Keeping fire doors compliant

  • Self-closing and latching. Every fire door has to close on its own and latch. A closer that stops short is the most common failure.
  • No wedges or kick-downs. Doors can only be held open by devices that release on the fire alarm.
  • Labels left alone. Don't paint over or remove the labels on the door and frame.
  • Inspected regularly. See fire door inspections in Calgary for what an NFPA 80 inspection covers.

FAQ

Common questions

Still unsure? Call Calgary at 403-650-5232.

How do I find a fire door's rating?

Look for the label on the hinge edge of the door and on the frame, usually in the rabbet. It shows the rating and the listing agency. If it's missing or painted over, we can help work out what the opening needs.

Can a fire door have glass in it?

Yes, with fire-rated glazing in a listed size and frame for that door's rating. Ordinary glass can't be added in the field.

Can you repair a fire door or does it need replacing?

Many repairs are allowed, such as new closers, latches and hinges that suit the label. Damage to the door or frame itself may mean replacement. We'll tell you which after we look.
